In the winter of 2017, John Paul Pitts started writing again, but he had to move back in with his parents in Florida; his mother was sick, his studio neglected, and the country wasn't doing much better. He then began writing as many short pop songs as possible. He shared his demos with Mikey, Lindsey, and Tyler. Together, they recorded the basics of 25 tracks at the end of summer 2018. The rhythm section quickly fell into place, but it took longer for the vocals and guitar overdubs. John Paul slept for several weeks on the studio couch, mixing until dawn. After months of work, everything finally came together. The Carefree Theatre in West Palm Beach, Florida, was the only real cultural venue in the city for most of his childhood. It was the kind of place that revealed the existence of a whole world outside of Florida, the kind of experience that would make a 21-year-old student want to drop out of school to form a band. Unfortunately, in a town overrun by indifference and materialism, the theatre could not survive. This album is about coming full circle. The band has had its ups and downs, many changes over the years, but here they are, back where they started. After a decade of touring and releasing records, Surfer Blood is back with its first label, Kanine Records, just in time for the tenth anniversary of Astro Coast.
