The two quartet sessions included in the second volume present another aspect of the discographic collaboration between the two men, which spanned nearly a decade. As a bonus, a new unreleased quintet session from 1961, featuring guitarist Pierre Cullaz. In the early 60s, the rise of rock'n'roll and the 'yé-yé' wave would have a lasting impact on the musical landscape, somewhat blurring the lines in the variety genre. Jazz musicians, who had previously held the 'high ground', would have to adapt. Some, like Emmanuel Soudieux, bassist of Django Reinhardt's quintet and later of Yves Montand's orchestra, would leave the profession. Others, like pianist René Urtreger, would play backup for the stars of the moment while waiting for better days. Stéphane Grappelli, whose difficult childhood made him acutely aware of the precariousness and risks of uncertain tomorrows, would accept a position at the Hilton hotel restaurant on Avenue de Suffren in 1967: the Toit de Paris. He would stay there for five years. It was there that he was reunited with Sacha Distel at the very beginning of 1970. At that time, Stéphane was not yet the jazz violin star we know today. A former partner of Django Reinhardt, the violinist certainly enjoyed an excellent reputation, bolstered by unwavering professionalism, but time had passed. Two personalities would then help restore the artist's media visibility and international audience to match his immense talent: Yehudi Menuhin and Sacha Distel. Those years were indeed prosperous for Sacha, known to the general public as a singer, but also passionate about jazz guitar (let's not forget he was the first French disciple of Jimmy Raney) and incidentally the host (since 1963) of the famous 'Sacha Show' on television.
