sizzla_black-woman-child_2024_soc
BLACK WOMAN & CHILD
When Sizzla released the album “Black Woman & Child” in 1997, it created a true Roots revolution in the Reggae scene. Produced by Bobby "Digital" Dixon and Sly and Robbie, this album approaches musical perfection, and the lyrics demonstrate how committed Sizzla is to Rastafarianism and the Ghetto Youths Foundation in Jamaica, to save and educate the underprivileged youth of Kingston's ghettos. It features Capleton, Determine, and Edi Fitzroy, and includes tracks that have become classics such as: "Love Is Divine," "One Away," and "Black Woman & Child." Sizzla, nicknamed Sizzla Kalonji, was born in Annotto Bay, in the parish of St. Mary, Jamaica, and grew up in the very closed community of August Town in Kingston. A very prolific artist, he has released over 50 albums under his own name to date, in addition to about fifteen albums shared with other artists. He started his career alongside his friend Producer Caveman (Lee "Scratch" Perry's cousin). In 1996, his career took another decisive turn, as this year marked the beginning of his long and still ongoing collaboration with Phillip Fattis Burrel, head of the fabulous Xterminator Label. 1997 would be the year of Sizzla's international revelation with the release of his third album "Black Woman And Child," now a cult classic, which even then had the effect of a bomb, earning him a first nomination for the MOBO award for best international reggae artist in 1998. That year, 1998, would also see the release of two more albums, "Freedom Cry" and "Kalonji," almost identical but no less impeccable works, which would lead to a second MOBO awards nomination. From 1999 onwards, everything would accelerate even further, and Sizzla became the most in-demand Reggae/Dancehall artist in the world, representing a gold mine for Labels that were scrambling to sign him. Sizzla also has another role: he is a qualified priest and treasurer of the Nyahbinghi Order and the main founder of the Ghetto Youths Foundation, which explains why his lyrics are so committed to this cause and to Rastafarianism.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0898/4943/0360/files/0054645711418_802d227c-4e64-43e5-9478-5b6073251806.jpg?v=1760402488
