Overnight, she found herself with three young, unschooled children - twins who had just turned two and a six-year-old - cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and changing diapers from morning to night, with three little ones coming in and out of her bed all night like a game of musical chairs. She was stuck in a part of herself that was far too small, feeling her other facets shrink and gradually disappear. She was losing her artistic side. Santigold struggled but eventually managed to carve out a space where she could refocus and collaborate virtually with producers and contributors: Rostam, Boys Noize, Dre Skull, P2J, Nick Zinner, SBTRKT, JakeOne, Illangelo, Doc McKinney, Psymun, Ricky Blaze, Lido, Ray Brady, and Ryan Olson. Recording Spirituals was a return to herself after being stuck in survival mode. It was only once this creative space was established that she realized she was not just making music, but a lifeline. California was on fire, there was a plague to hide from, and social justice protests were happening one after another. After facing writer's block, the lyrics began to flow effortlessly. She had never written so quickly in her life. Santigold decided to shape the future, to look towards where we are going, to create beauty and move towards that beauty.
