Overnight, she found herself with three young children out of school — two-year-old twins and a six-year-old — cooking, cleaning, doing endless laundry and changing diapers from morning to night, with three small children coming in and out of her bed all night like musical chairs. She was stuck in a part of herself that was far too small, feeling her other facets shrink and gradually disappear. She was losing her artistic side. Santigold struggled but eventually managed to define a space where she could recenter herself and virtually collaborate with producers and contributors: Rostam, Boys Noize, Dre Skull, P2J, Nick Zinner, SBTRKT, JakeOne, Illangelo, Doc McKinney, Psymun, Ricky Blaze, Lido, Ray Brady, and Ryan Olson. Recording Spirituals was a return to herself after being stuck in survival mode. It was only after creating this space to create that she realized she wasn't just creating music, but a lifeline. California was on fire, a plague had to be hidden from, and protests for social justice followed one another. After facing writer's block, the lyrics began to flow. She had never written so fast in her life. Santigold decided to shape the future, to look at where we are going, to create beauty and move towards that beauty.
