{"product_id":"robert-schumann_concertos-pour-piano_2015","title":"Concertos pour piano","description":"A “new” Schumann Concerto by Annie Fischer — her fourth issued if one counts the studio version with Otto Klemperer — is not to be refused, especially since Carlo Maria Giulini accompanies her with the Philharmonia! The rapport, which should have been magical, appears only in flashes; each plays a little on his own side, Giulini seeking the symphonic dimension, Annie Fischer simply not quite in form, with imprecise runs, singing without accent, a left hand in minimum-service mode that barely brushes the inner counter-melodies in the finale. The matter is settled: her great Schumann Concerto remains the one she recorded for Cologne Radio on April 28, 1958 under the exalted direction of Joseph Keilberth. But what follows makes the disc truly worthwhile: on August 29, 1962 Leon Fleisher and George Szell carry off Beethoven’s 2nd Concerto with all manner of Mozartian subtleties — those sprightly strings, those dotted rhythms, that buoyant keyboard. Ideal balance, chamber-music dialogue; one must hear how Szell frames Fleisher’s piano, their complicity is even more brilliant here than in the recording they made the previous year, on April 16, 1961 in Cleveland for CBS. Magnificent. This unexpected release argues for the unveiling of everything they recorded together in concert. This Beethoven Second opened the concert of August 29, 1962 at the Kunsthaus in Lucerne, whose second half Audite had already issued: a Brahms First Symphony where Szell also set the Swiss Festival Orchestra ablaze (Audite CD 95.265, which also includes an irresistible performance of Dvorak’s 8th Symphony: George Szell there was reunited with the Czech Philharmonic).
