The meeting between Quatuor Girard and philosopher Martin Steffens gave rise to the idea of interpreting \"The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross\" by Joseph Haydn, punctuated by spiritual meditations as was the case during the creation of the work in 1786. From this meeting also emerged the idea of juxtaposing these Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross with the Seven Words of the Virgin Mary in the gospels and commissioning a work (for string quartet) on this theme from a contemporary composer whose reputation is well established: Alexandre Benéteau. It is also the intention of Quatuor Girard and Martin Steffens to facilitate the public's encounter with these musical works as well as with the texts of the gospels that are their source. Indeed, while Martin Steffens' meditations are Christian, they retain a universal dimension and can resonate with each person's human experience. Since antiquity, the Christian tradition has emphasized the significant and discreet presence of Mary in the gospels. A presence that invites following her son and that seems to be summarized by her seven words reported by the four gospels.
