Yet, perhaps this is the fragile and ineffable beauty of continuing to pound away on bass-guitar-drums in an era like ours: there's not much left to gain, simply to create a space of freedom, a creative and collective surge. Pop Crimes is one of those bands capable, with two riffs, a few lyrical snippets, and a lot of sweat, of reminding us why we still want to cling to guitar rock, timeless and indestructible. There's always an inexplicable alchemy in that moment when four disparate personalities become a band, a multi-headed hydra, a micro-world that captivates listeners. The album opens with the electric ballad \"Open My Eyes,\" and listening to the interplay of vocals and intertwined guitars (supported by a bass\/drum section more cohesive than ever), one understands that Pop Crimes has matured and is now able to make a recording sound as if they're playing in the next room. Lively, relentlessly effective, and catchy. \"Promises,\" forged in British tarmac, gives full reign to the defiant and moving vocals, taking us wherever they want, fist raised and head a little dazed. When the band slows the tempo on \"I Wish I Could Saved You But Did I Really,\" a waltz by a life-battered crooner, we feel transported back to the dirty cobblestones of the Lower East Side in the late 1970s. \"Should I live in my dreams\" plays with shifts in rhythm and tone, standing firm in its modern and moving post-punk boots.
