But if you have listened closely to Shornstein's prodigious output, you know that separating and classifying the work is actually contrary to the energy of Photay’s music. What, at first glance, may appear as differences, is actually gathered together by a shared sonic warmth, a material pastoralism at play. Whatever category it engages with, Photay makes open-air music, at the mercy of the elements, with the aim of performing different human movements—some physical, some spiritual, some emotional, some philosophical. On Windswept, Photay's fifth solo album, this pastoral unity is even more explicit: It's an album about wind. The project began with the producer's conception of a synthesizer patch to, in his own words, \"mimic 'wind' as a powerful, profound, unpredictable, and at times, overwhelming spirit.\" The use of this \"wind\" patch, then, became Windswept's instrumental through-line, and the element became the album's thematic maypole.
