No Joy's discography is marked by collaboration and exploration, and 'Motherhood' is no exception. Band member Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Sky Ferreira, Japanese Breakfast) returns in his role as co-producer and multi-instrumentalist. Madeleine Campbell, author of the zine Women In Sound, acts as sound engineer accompanied by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie). Drummer Jamie Thompson (Islands, Esmerine) translated his rhythmic ideas into impactful performances and brought back his homemade drum machines. Tara McLeod (Kittie), a frantic shredder, makes her debut with No Joy, contributing not only guitars but also banjos. The songs progressed from laptop demos to labyrinthine recordings, recorded primarily at Braids' Studio Toute Garnie in Montreal. White-Gluz laid down the vocals from her home, which allowed for experimentation with ethereal harmonies and muffled ad libs.
