In what is becoming a tradition, it follows Spaces (2013), an album of the year according to Pitchfork, recorded during concerts over the previous 18 months, and Tripping With Nils Frahm (2020), which was also released as a film. The latter, arriving in the wake of All Melody (2019) and its 2020 companion, All Encores, was recorded during concerts in the grandiose Funkhaus Saal 1 in Berlin, once the largest studio of the former East German broadcasting complex. Paris, however, is Frahm's first live album from a single night, March 21, 2024, and contains ten tracks over a duration of 84 minutes. Frahm's performances have always been known for expanding his studio recordings, and Paris is no exception. Drawing on his substantial catalog, the German composer and producer reworks pieces from Music For Animals (\"Right Right Right\" and \"Briefly\") alongside less recent tracks from The Bells (2009) (\"Some,\" also included on Solo (2015)) and Screws (2012) (\"Re,\" originally recorded with only nine fingers after Frahm broke his thumb). There is also \"Spells\" from All Encores and \"You Name It\" from this year's solo piano album, Day, while the brand new, luxurious, and strangely captivating \"Opera\" sets the stage for \"On The Roof\" from his heartbreaking and award-winning score for the German thriller Victoria, widely acclaimed in 2015, filmed in a single camera and in one take. After gaining recognition for delicate piano vignettes, Frahm's instrumental range has expanded to include a mountain of synthesizers and vintage keyboard instruments. Among these pieces is a custom-built organ as well as the final glass harmonica constructed by Gerhard Finkenbeiner, a master glassblower who, in the 1980s, resurrected the instrument—originally invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761—before dying in 1999 under mysterious, still unresolved circumstances.
