Memphis is at the heart of the United States and at the crossroads of American black music. And Clarksdale is there, like a ghost town that never woke up from its past, located 60 miles further south, in the state of Mississippi, on the road to Louisiana and New Orleans. This is where I, Nico Wayne Toussaint, chose to live a studious, spiritual, musical retreat during the beautiful cotton harvest season, when temperatures hover around 30 degrees but autumn is already approaching, and as far as the eye can see, the fields are white with cotton flowers. I organized my retreat in a tin and wooden houseboat, set by the side of a country road, in front of this opalescent ocean. It is here, with my guitars and harmonicas, that I set to work in context, on the repertoire of the Mississippi legends: RL Burnside, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Fred McDowell... And the clubs of the city, like the sidewalks of New Orleans, became my playground and my public practice space. Eight weeks at this pace allowed me to make wonderful encounters, settle into a routine, play a lot, write songs, and find a new sound. It is all this experience that I brought back to France, which I infused into the rehearsal sessions for our upcoming album. The \"juke joint\" sound of Clarksdale that I wanted to imprint on the record quickly required the addition of the brass I had also heard, between New Orleans and Memphis. It didn't take much to summon the Big Band version of my group in full, that is, all the musicians with whom I had already produced the tribute to James Cotton in 2017. Our trumpeter Pascal Drapeau arranged the brass parts and thus the sound of this new album began to take shape, composed 100% of original tracks and aiming to combine the rhythmic pulse of the Mississippi clubs with the dynamic brass riffs of Memphis. \"From Clarksdale With Love\" is therefore this loving postcard I am sending you from the land of blues, like an invitation to wander with me on the roads of Mississippi.
