{"product_id":"nick-waterhouse_nick-waterhouse_2019","title":"Nick Waterhouse","description":"Nick Waterhouse grew up in a coastal town near Long Beach, California. A serene setting he left in his twenties to move to San Francisco. There, he worked at record stores alongside a collective of young diggers and 45 RPM collectors, then began composing his own records: Time's All Gone in 2012, Holly in 2014, and Never Twice in 2016. Evocative albums imbued with perfectionism and a very clear vision that justifies every choice, from the studios to the musicians, from the arrangements to the album cover. As his records spread around the world, Waterhouse found a devoted audience, as well as many influential collaborators, including the mystic Ty Segall, the retro-futurist Leon Bridges, and the Los Angeles quartet Allah-Las, for whom he meticulously produced and played on the first two albums. There is a \"Waterhouse sound\" that comes from both the man and his method, namely recording everything on magnetic tape, using analog equipment, and playing live whenever possible. Now, he has finished his fourth album and he calls it Nick Waterhouse. Whether intentional or not, this may be his most thoughtful album, and the one that reflects him the most. Rawer, heavier, and more conflicted than anything he has done before, this self-titled album was recorded at the best studio in Los Angeles, Electro Vox Recorders, and was co-produced by Paul Butler (The Bees, Michael Kiwanuka, Devendra Banhart), the master of all things warm-sounding. The album is filled with talented musicians, such as Andres Rentaria, Paula Henderson, and saxophonist Mando Dorame. All of Waterhouse's new songs have a broad spectrum. They are muscular. The lyrics are suspicious, rebellious, and sometimes very vulnerable (muscle is just flesh, after all). Waterhouse saves his words to deliver coded and complex messages. He critiques both the era we live in and the innate flaws of humanity. On this album, he covers \"I Feel a Urge Coming On\" in tribute to the song's author, Joshie Jo Armstead, his own mentor and collaborator, who wrote with Ray Charles and sang as an Ikette and Raelette in the 60s and 70s. It’s his fourth album, but it makes sense that this is the record that bears his name. You can really hear Nick on this one. Not just the band. Not just the songs. Not just the sound. HIM. You can hear his mind at work. His passion. His focus. You can feel it.
