Shrine had no hits; in fact, very few sales. What it had was musical talent and a business plan that ended in glorious failure — inadvertently making the twenty pressed singles highly sought after by collectors. Interest was first sparked when a few of the faster numbers were played on the Northern Soul scene of the 70s, notably Eddie Daye's punchy \"Guess Who Loves You\" played by DJ Richard Searling at Wigan Casino. Then young Turkish DJs like Keb Darge and Guy Hennigan at Stafford's Top Of The World all-nighters in the 80s really embraced the Shrine cause and the search for hidden gems began. \"People were buying the known records on Shrine, but nobody was buying the unknown records,\" recalls Darge. Soon, copies of singles by the Cautions, Cairos, and Les Chansonettes became \"massive\" on the scene — J.D. Bryant's great ballad \"I Won't Be Coming Back\" sold for a fortune. When the label ceased operations in 1966, Singleton left the remaining stock at the office, before locking the door for the last time. Years later, after being introduced to Kent Records' Ady Croasdell by Ian Levine, Eddie retrieved the original masters from the studio. These tapes revealed unreleased gems by the Prophets (who would later appear as a 7-inch), Tippie \u0026amp; the Wisemen, Traci, Jimmy Armstrong, and others. These early cassette reissues came out on the short-lived Horace label and later, Ace released them more comprehensively on CD. Other labels stepped in but Shrine is now back in its true home. To celebrate this, we released last year \"Shrine Northern - The 60s Rarest Dance Label\" Kent LP, KENT 526. We re-examined the tapes, more deeply, and found 14 other sides worthy of a single. The superb but elusive Shrine recording by Barbara Long — released on its sister label Jet Set — rightfully opens the package and is coupled with \"Take It From Me\", previously only on CD, by the mysterious Traci — an early tape find. Like Barbara Long, Epsilon's \"Mind In A Bind\" was released just after the label folded and slipped out on Washington's Hem brand. It is reissued for the first time on 7\" with their \"Mad At The World\" making its UK 45 debut. The same scenario applies to the wonderful mid-tempo single by the Cautions \"Watch Your Step\". We have paired it with their still highly demanded \"No Other Way\"; long deleted from its 2009 repress. Despite Shrine's reputation for dance tracks, one of the label's most revered recordings is the beautiful ballad by Tippie \u0026amp; The Wisemen \"Wait Til I Get There\". This unreleased number came out on the first Horace LP in 1990. A decade later, Ady Croasdell found the tape of their \"I Shouldn't Mind Crying\" in the vaults of Universal Studios in Hollywood. This pleased the song's writer, Eddie Singleton, who hadn't heard his favorite since the recording date. Sidney Hall (of the Enjoyables) recorded the passionate rhythmic ballad \"I'm A Lover\" as a solo; it gets its first UK 45 release here. We have paired it with the catchy, raucous groove of the incredibly rare Cavaliers Shrine 45 \"Do What I Want\". This improved the audio over its previous versions. The Prophets' beautiful harmonic ballad \"Huh Baby\" also gets its first 45 reissue and we have included a slightly alternative version, found in the tapes, of \"If I Had One Gold Piece\", the original B-side. Finally, another Jet Set 45 by Jimmy Armstrong recorded at Shrine, \"I Won't Believe It Till I See It\" makes its Kent debut, paired with his killer blues ballad \"It's Gonna Take Time\" which has never been released before. Seven new Shrine 45s, accompanied by a beautifully packaged box containing rarely seen photos; soul heaven!","brand":"Multi-Artistes","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57447845495128,"sku":null,"price":23907597.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/0029667063500.jpg?v=1780612311","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/multi-artistes_shrine-records-rare-soul-sides-washington-dc-1965-1967_2024_soc","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
