These sixteen recordings, the result of one of the most beautiful artistic collaborations in the history of recording, are a loving interpretation of French lyrical art by Michel Plasson and the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse. It all began with two essential masterpieces by Offenbach: in 1976, a lively La Vie Parisienne, featuring the wonderful Régine Crespin and Mady Mesplé, which immediately achieved great success, followed two years later by a delightful Orpheus in the Underworld. The conductor and his Toulouse ensemble, eager to explore and highlight the French musical heritage, did not forget to record rarities (and in what a way!), always with one of the greatest bass-baritones of our time, José Van Dam: Mireille (Freni, 1979), Padmâvatî (Horne, Gedda, 1982-83), Guercoeur (Behrens, 1986), Don Quichotte (Berganza and Fondary, 1992), then Hérodiade (Studer, Heppner, 1994), allowing us to enjoy the pleasure of hearing these works too rarely presented on stage, and even less on record. It is also in the masterful interpretation of the greatest operas that Michel Plasson and the Orchestre du Capitole gained a reputation that transcended borders: an extraordinary Lakmé (1997) with Natalie Dessay, to whom the role is now intrinsically associated; THE legendary Faust with Richard Leech, Cheryl Studer, José Van Dam, and Thomas Hampson (1991); Jessye Norman at the peak of her career in La Belle Hélène (1984); two breathtaking versions of Gounod's Romeo and Juliette, the first (1983) with Alfredo Kraus and Catherine Malfitano, impeccable, the second with the glamorous couple Roberto Alagna \/ Angela Gheorghiu (with the ballet, 1995); the anthology Manon of Romanian soprano Ileana Cotrubas, with Kraus by her side (1982)...
