As they shared their music, Andrew and Ben soon realized that despite their personality differences (one is very practical and the other very spontaneous), they shared a common taste for the mystical and pagan, hypnotic sounds, and the belief that any \"joke\" (in a song) can be both sad, profound, and funny. This pair of friends delved into the culture of duos and found themselves naturally incorporating the hallucinated mannerisms of Incredible String Band, the minimalist purring of Suicide, the silky soul-pop of Hall and Oates, the trance of Spacemen 3, the avant-garde romanticism of Royal Trux... to become MGMT. On campus, Ben and Andrew set up a series of very, very noisy live performances without even thinking about recording anything, and writing a new song for each new \"concert\" lasting a maximum of 15 minutes! This concept of one concert\/one song is the manifesto presented in \"Oracular Spectacular\": each track shines with all its elements and interconnects within the extraordinary and unconventional structures that form MGMT's musical personality. After the release of an EP and a few concerts later, Ben and Andrew secluded themselves to record some \"home sessions\" which would form the foundations of what would soon become \"Oracular Spectacular\". This album opens with \"Time To Pretend,\" whimsical and chimerical with an underlying sense of impending ruin, and ends with \"Future Reflections\" (premonitions of a post-apocalyptic future where colonies of young people live on beaches in a primitive and wild style, surfing). Between these two tracks: the chaotic waves and vibrations of the current world. This album distills the essence of the past, the promises of the future, and an authentic transition into the 4th dimension.
