Under the impetus of director Wouter Van Looy, they build an intoxicating show that blends the melancholic songs of John Dowland (1563-1626) with the sounds of electronic music, in view of performances at the Lucerne theater the following spring. Originally, all three come from rock\/metal\/punk, and Wouter Van Looy would revive in each a deep desire for elsewhere. \u003cbr\u003eFollowing the success of the Lucerne evenings, the mezzo-soprano engages a few months later her two colleagues, who have become her friends, in the pursuit of a common adventure, which is sealed in the idea of Melankhôlia: the enchanting songs of Dowland will now be joined by notable pop songs rearranged in the same spirit, where the archlute or modern electric guitar willingly surround themselves with a Moog, percussion, or a mellotron, embracing the voice. Two eras speak to each other, dialogue, until they merge. \u003cbr\u003eSeveral themes structure this intensely lyrical journey, carried by the lascivious voice of Marina Viotti: love and its illusions, evoked both in One by U2 and in Fairwell, Too Fair by Dowland, hopes (Die Not Before Thy Day by Dowland or Jóga by Björk) as well as death (Born to Die by Lana Del Rey preceded by In Darkness Let Me Dwell by Dowland) or redemption (Flow My Tears by Dowland). \u003cbr\u003eBy infusing the spirit of her youth, those years when she wrote her own lyrics and songs for her metal band, into her present, which leads her to defend the most beautiful roles of the great lyrical repertoire, Marina Viotti delivers a very intimate part of herself. More than a transgenre journey through the centuries, In Darkness Through the Light is actually the story of a life path, a struggle for life and against darkness. In spring 2019, the mezzo-soprano is diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. She completely recovers. With the shadows gone, Marina Viotti can share her secret, openly.
