{"product_id":"mamaki-boys_patriote_2021_mdl","title":"Patriote","description":"A 2009 ALBUM FROM THE NIGERIAN TRIO MIXING UNDERGROUND HIP-HOP AND SAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTS. FOR THE FIRST TIME ON VINYL \u0026 CASSETTE. Traditional village music transformed into fiery, frenetic underground hip-hop. Emerging from the digital cultural renaissance of the early 2000s, where DIY studios popped up across West Africa, *Patriote* is a shining example of localized global music. Hypnotic, driving rhythms built from sampled percussion and chopped instruments combine with a staccato ragga-inspired syncopated flow to form contagiously rhythmic tracks that sound like nothing else. Mamaki Boys was formed in 2002 by Aziz Tony, Bachou Issouf, and Salif André, when a local hip-hop movement exploded in Niger's capital. *Patriote* was recorded to address a trend in the scene they considered unoriginal. Produced at Studio BAT, one of the first studios in Niamey, Mamaki Boys sought to merge modern hip-hop with traditional music. They invited older musicians to the studio to play Nigerian instruments like the duma and kalango, which were sampled and looped into their compositions. The goal was to valorize and incorporate tradition, ancestral dances, the things their grandparents did in the village into hip-hop, and to showcase all the colors of their country. Describing their music as \"tradi-moderne,\" a Nigerian folk revitalization movement, their cultural manifesto is expressed through all aspects of their work. Each track relies heavily on traditional instruments, and each rhythm is based on a dance from Niger. Their mission extends to the urgency of their lyrics: \"Takkai\" challenges the population to preserve its culture, \"Kagani Kagani\" is a call to reclaim rights over minerals, oil, and uranium from their colonizers, while \"Komando\" uses war cries to urge artists to continue expressing themselves. Self-produced in 2009 on limited edition CDR in Niger, *Patriote* by Mamaki Boys is a powerful entry into the 21st-century global scene, repurposing the tools of globalization in the struggle for cultural identity.","brand":"Mamaki Boys","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55312087056728,"sku":null,"price":23952490.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/0602318137609_21e7e63d-0a8a-48a8-9e6f-29052e963d01.jpg?v=1760320799","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/mamaki-boys_patriote_2021_mdl","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
