Kevin Morby was absentmindedly going through a box of old family photos in the basement of his childhood home in Kansas City. A few hours earlier, during a family dinner, his father had collapsed in front of him and had to be rushed to the hospital. That night, still in shock, he started looking at these images until one of them caught his eye. In the photo, his father as a young man, proud, strong, and very confident, poses shirtless on a lawn as if he were ready to fight, while just hours earlier, he had been lying on the kitchen floor. As the months went by and the world changed radically around him, he felt a strange similarity between the feelings of that night and the atmosphere of those spring days. Fear, anxiety, hope, and resilience were all mixed together. While his father was recovering, he began to reflect on these ideas. He took the road to Memphis, settled at the Peabody Hotel, and spent his days paying tribute to the dreamers he admired; on the banks of the Mississippi River where Jeff Buckley died, in the neighborhood where Jay Reatard spent his last day, in front of the Stax tent, or at Graceland. In the evenings, he would return to his room and document his thoughts with a makeshift setup, just his guitar and a microphone. Once again, Sam Cohen, who had produced Singing Saw and Oh My God, was at the helm of the project. They began working together with drummer Nick Kinsey. Over time, the team grew. Pianist Oliver Hill, his mother Meg, and his sister Charlotte for strings, Cochemea Gastelum (saxophone), Jared Samuel (organ), Alecia Chakour (vocals, tambourine), Eric Johnson (banjo), Josh Jaeger (drums, percussion), Brandee Younger (harp), Makaya McCraven (drums), Cassandra Jenkins (vocals), as well as Tim Heidecker and Alia Shawkat joined the project. And the final sessions inevitably took place in Memphis, at the original Sun Records studio. All these people coming together to make music was unimaginable the year before. The arrangements are lush, the lyrics incisive.
