{"product_id":"katel_mutants-merveilles-vinyl_2021_lad","title":"MUTANTS MERVEILLES (vinyl)","description":"\"Mutants merveilles\" (Mutant Wonders): right from its title, Katel's fourth album creates a stir by juxtaposing two seemingly contradictory terms. Is it an oxymoron? A pleonasm? The single 'Rosechou', a highly addictive queer anthem, provides a kind of answer by opting for radiant joy displayed as a radical stance: the euphoria of being a fluid body, a different body, freed from constraints, and of not belonging to the \"dead old world.\" The body is at the heart of this album with its decidedly political tone. Mutant bodies ('Rosechou'), bodies subjected to police violence ('Sauf qu'on l'arrête'), women's bodies constantly threatened ('En chasse'), confined bodies cut off from others ('Ni mal d'amour'), lighter bodies in love ('Par la place'). Katel questions power relations and their intrinsic brutality, the grip exercised by those who cling to it, as well as the oppressions suffered by women - a subject close to her heart and reflected in the approach of the Fraca !!! label, which she co-founded in 2018 with Robi and Emilie Marsh, and which reflects on the place of women in the music industry. \"Mutants merveilles\" also addresses the body, being more groove-oriented than its predecessors. Playful, disheveled, or jerky and jarring rhythms, which blend numerous influences ranging from hypnotic trip-hop to bouncy sixties pop, from Steve Reich to Radiohead. Katel chooses to divide the album into two contrasting parts. A welcoming and fluid first side, a side of light with ample and unconstrained melodies, between mischievous joy and serene melancholy, where the tracks flow smoothly. And then a more troubled side, a shadow side with deconstructed arrangements, unsettling and abrasive sounds, and sometimes brutal emotions. Over the years, Katel has carved out a unique place for herself on the Francophone scene, through her exacting standards, her refusal to be confined to a defined musical genre, and to rely on the ease of expertise. Her approach is always dictated by a precise vision and intense reflection, without ever falling into the trap of intellectualized music that would forget to address emotions. This fourth album is intimately linked to the context of the spring 2020 lockdown, which provided Katel with a bubble of isolation and freedom in which to fully immerse herself in writing, and from which the tracks burst forth like flashes of inspiration. During this initial phase, she worked on the tracks by producing them directly, composing some on piano or Minilogue, others from loops or bass lines, then experimenting with different types of sounds and processes until she achieved already advanced forms. Blending electronic and organic sounds, \"Mutants merveilles\" seems constantly traversed by opposing currents that sometimes tame each other and sometimes violently clash: the birth of a romantic relationship tinged by the end of another ('Je t'aime déjà'), the experience of confinement that prevents encounters but does not extinguish the light that carries us ('Ni mal d'amour'), the night that can be a place of danger for women ('En chasse') or a liberating refuge allowing one to be oneself ('La nuit est mon arène'), a violent world where love emerges as a force of resistance ('Par la place'). This fourth album cultivates the art of paradoxes: thoughtful yet immediate, troubling yet soothing, dense and complex yet always accessible. A mutant album, a wonder album. And another stone added to the edifice of a work as demanding as it is fascinating. Katel has the immense talent of never disappointing our expectations while knowing how not to repeat herself, and \"Mutants merveilles\" provides a new brilliant example. Artist, singer-songwriter of 3 albums, Katel has expanded her palette by becoming an album producer, arranger, and\/or mixer for other artists, a stage and studio musician, then co-founder of the FRACA!!! label, with Robi and Emilie Marsh. A label that clearly positions itself to promote the place of women in music at all levels. She also set up her recording studio, Mutterville, and the Rospiko Publishing editions. Her profile is therefore one that tends to develop, that of the artist-entrepreneur. Katel also conducts writing workshops (Studio des Variétés Masterclasses \/ workshops \/ conferences: The place of women in music \/ The artist entrepreneur (BIS de Nantes, BNF, Festivals). Finally, Katel is a mentor for the MEWEN program for women entrepreneurs in the music industry.
