{"product_id":"hermon-mehari_asmara-vinyl_2022_lad","title":"ASMARA (vinyl)","description":"‘Who dared it’ (celui qui a osé), which opens this album, takes its title from the birthplace of Hermon Mehari’s father, MENDEFERA. It is also a tribute to the courage of this father who dared to leave his country, Eritrea, in 1979, in the midst of the war against Ethiopia. Arriving in Italy after a dangerous journey, he met his future wife in a refugee camp in the 'land of the Red Sea' and emigrated with her to the United States, where Hermon was born thirty-five years ago. - - The trumpeter, trained in jazz in one of its birthplaces, Kansas City, waited until the COVID-19 pandemic to musically explore his ancestral culture. - - Confined alone in the Corrèze countryside, he played with the rhythms, melodies, and scales he had heard as a child, at home and at community celebrations. He drew a piece from this for his previous electronic-tinged album 'A Change for The Dreamlike'. - - In September 2021, during the recording of Sélène Saint-Aimé's second album, which Hermon accompanied on records and on stage, Antoine Rajon suggested he compose an album entirely dedicated to this family heritage. - - All the tracks on ASMARA hark back to Eritrea, which Hermon only visited once at the age of five. The sights, sounds, and smells of this sole return inspired the composition 'I Remember Eritrea'. This, the only duet on the album, highlights the deep musical symbiosis he shares with his childhood friend, Peter Schlamb. The pianist and vibraphonist collaborates in the USA with Logan Richardson, Ben Van Gelder, and Aaron Parks. - - While Ethiopian jazz, whose tradition endures, is well known, Asmara is a first experience of jazz inspired by the folklore of the various peoples of Eritrea. Beyond the political conflicts that oppose their states, the populations of the two countries claim a common and fraternal belonging to Abyssinian culture, as Hermon expresses in one of his compositions: 'Call Me Habesha'.","brand":"Hermon Mehari","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55310226784600,"sku":null,"price":23884667.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/3770014204349_4adc20f9-c24b-4a6b-8e6b-fbb043cbbf13.jpg?v=1760318911","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/hermon-mehari_asmara-vinyl_2022_lad","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
