{"product_id":"giulia-genini_lachrimae_2019","title":"Lachrimae","description":"The collection Lachrymae (...or seven tears) by John Dowland, published in 1604, is based on the four descending notes of the Lachrimae theme and is presented in seven pavans (The Seven Tears). It was designed for lute and for a consort of violins or viols and was completed with a series of dances (pavans, galliards, and almands) to total twenty-one pieces. The interpretation by the Opéra Prima consort, led by violist Cristiano Contaldin, is closer to the Italian version of the consort (Trabacci, Bassani, Storace revealed in a recent album by Guido Balestracci) than to its original English idiom. Gone is the weeping song, the lament, the melancholy, and even the dance; the ensemble (curiously reverberated by a deceptive acoustic) here possesses a sweet smoothness, long frozen in a sort of instrumental cocoon that nothing seems to penetrate. The galliards are viscous and lack vigor. One will search in vain for \"tactus,\" the sense of syncopation, of elocution. Qualities that were so well offered by Jordi Savall and his Hespérion XX in their reference recording for Allia Vox.
