Mélodies et polyphonies du pré-baroque","description":"The violin appeared, almost in its current form, around 1500, but from its origins, it was developed, like viols, recorders, or other families of instruments, in several sizes and ranges, imitating the voices of a choir. Thus, the violin's treble (later called violino piccolo), the viola in treble and bass forms, the tenor violin, and the small and large bass violins emerged. All these instruments were used at least until the end of the 17th century (for example, Albinoni's sonatas for 5 Opus 2, published in 1700, include a tenor part between the viola and the continuo). The tenor violin would disappear around 1750, supplanted by the cello, except in England, where it still appears in the instrumentarium of quartet editions, for instance, until the end of the century. Most of the \"large\" violas were shortened in the 19th century, which was the era of standardization, with Paganini's \"Gran Viola\" being a survivor, while the baroque bass violin would integrate into cellos, changing its tuning. It is part of the repertoire of the \"consorts of violins\" from the 16th century that the ensemble Sonadori, led by lutenist Pascale Boquet, recreates for us here, intertwining pieces that are polyphonic and solely dedicated to instruments (often motets and other pieces originally written for human voices) with others where the \"treble,\" often very ornamented according to the Italian art of \"passagi\" (diminutions, variations often improvised), is sung by soprano Anne Delafosse, following the customs of the time. Strangely, Renaissance violin consorts are now extremely rare compared to viol or recorder ensembles. However, contrary to what the booklet of this disc claims, the ensemble Sonadori is not unique in the world; the King's Noyse, a North American Renaissance violin ensemble, was created as early as 1988 by David Douglass, a world specialist in this repertoire, and has since its inception recorded about ten exciting recordings, to which this one adds some wonders dedicated to this fascinating instrumental ensemble.
