To do this, they took out a bank loan before heading to ABBA's Polar Studio in Stockholm. If the evolution from the Joy Division\/The Cure elements of 'In Silence' to the keyboard-based sounds of 'Small Mercies' was already a big step, the evolution to 'Songs' was just as significant. The most striking aspect is an increased focus on catchy melodies and song structures. Although the acoustic piano had already played a key role on 'Small Mercies', its role is even more central on 'Songs', especially since the original recording contained no guitars. This gives the album a unique identity at a time when digital synthesizers dominated the music scene. 'Songs' was released on their own label, Easter Productions, in 1985 and sold 5,000 copies in Norway without any promotion or singles, receiving unanimous critical acclaim and topping many year-end best album charts. The album was then picked up by Virgin UK, which, after adding a new song and some guitars to certain tracks, re-released it internationally in 1986 to great success, particularly in the UK. However, what we have here is the original 1985 edition. Subsequently, Fra Lippo Lippi, now a duo composed of Kristoffersen and Sørensen, recorded 'Light and Shade' (1987) in Los Angeles, produced by Walter Becker (Steely Dan).
