The first eight masses, written between 1750 and 1782, are inspired in various ways, while the last six (Heiligmesse, Paukenmesse, Nelsonmesse, Theresienmesse, Schöpfungsmesse, Harmoniemesse), composed over six years (from 1796 to 1802), hold a central position in Haydn's output and form a cohesive whole of great quality. With these last masses and his sublime oratorio The Creation, Haydn became the greatest composer of the second half of the 18th century. These six masses, with their great dramatic, emotional, and spiritual strength, showcase all the maturity and musical knowledge from Haydn's earlier instrumental and stage works. The masses as a whole have a rather festive mood, written in major keys (they were often masses of celebration and joy); only the famous Nelsonmesse from 1798 is in a minor key, where Haydn offers us an astonishing style of immense tension, often tragic, in which the choir is treated as a true soloist, given how difficult its part is.
