With appoggiaturas, sustained notes, chromaticism, or pedal notes, he often writes dissonances of barely imaginable modernity. The only liturgical work that has come down to us, these Lamentations can be considered the first Baroque Lessons of Darkness. Another composer represented is Paolo Quagliati, whose Ricercar XIX overflows with imagination. Who would believe that this is music written in the 16th century?
