Seventeen pianists from eight countries and three continents have interpreted De-Phazz tracks from its 28-year history. The ensemble brings together personalities as diverse as the great Argentine neoclassical Cristian Vivaldi, the Swedish ballad expert Ana Rebekah, the Norwegian jazzman Bugge Wesseltoft, the English streaming pioneer Becky Ainge, and the East German rock producer and film music legend Rainer Oleak. Also present are classical pianists such as Ukrainian Lera Palyarush, the Nordic dark music artist Stein Austrud, the rising star of Swedish nu-jazz Rikard From, as well as De Phazz veterans Eckes Malz and Ulf Kleiner. But whatever their backgrounds, they all share a deep and audible sympathy for the source material. Sarah Watson, for example, treats the teasing Latin riff of De Phazz's global hit \"The Mambo Craze\" with the utmost respect, while letting some of the original song's lightness shine through in her dreamy interpretation. \"I remember I couldn't get that catchy tune out of my head for about a week,\" says the Canadian, whose songs have been streamed more than 50 million times, about the creative process. \"Then, at some point, I played a slowed-down version for my son to put him to sleep. Once he was asleep, I went back to the piano and worked on the version I eventually recorded. It's a superb song, and I really loved working on it!\" Robert Gromotka, meanwhile, transforms \"No Jive\" into a fragile rubato waltz. The song from De Phazz's debut album, Detunized Gravity, has long haunted him, confesses the Berlin neoclassical genius. \"When it came to choosing a track, the decision felt almost instinctive, like a return to an old friend, but in a new light. I wanted to preserve the emotional essence of the song, but allow it to breathe differently, more intimately, more thoughtfully, like a whispered memory rather than one spoken aloud.\" The participants in 'De-Phazz presents Octaves' draw on all possible sources of the piano tradition. One can sometimes detect a hint of Chopin, sometimes a touch of Satie, sometimes something of stride, soundtrack, or blues. On creaky pianos, prepared pianos, and grand pianos with shimmering and muted tones, they have created nostalgic news, ironic dramas, and exhilarating meditations, touching but never commonplace. The neoclassical interpretations are to the originals what the octave is to the fundamental note: they are closely linked, but vibrate differently. Once again, with emotion, so to speak. Although it doesn't seem entirely clear what constitutes a remake and what constitutes source material. At least that's the opinion of Pit Baumgartner, sound collage virtuoso and spiritual rector of De-Phazz, whose mixing desk was where lounge classics like \"The Mambo Craze,\" \"No Jive,\" and \"Dummes Spiel\" were created. \"I'm really thrilled with how lovingly this was put together. With some versions, I thought: this could be the original we copied. That's how it should be played! Which confirms the old adage: good songs work in any context, even across genre boundaries.\"","brand":"De‐Phazz","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55766852403544,"sku":null,"price":23905405.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/4260082361970_d587262a-fdd2-49ed-8930-7cd9b6588bc2.jpg?v=1766082692","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/dephazz_presents-octaves180-gr-gatefold-sleeve_2025_soc","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
