Like much of the music they have released over a quarter-century, Deerhoof on Future Teenage Cave Artists (Satomu Matsuzaki on bass and vocals, Ed Rodriguez and John Dieterich on guitars, and Greg Saunier on drums, vocals, and piano) assembles fragments of RnB and rock and transforms them into a new language of revolution, abandoning verse-chorus structures for a dreamlike logic and blind intuition. But what makes this album different is the intimacy offered: blues riffs and slide guitars are joined by rusty pianos and whispered three-part harmonies. The album was born out of self-isolation and deprivation and sounds as if the band had retreated into a cave with the bare minimum. Many instruments and vocals were recorded with nothing more than a computer microphone. The raw collages make no effort to hide the seams, leaving these imperfections strangely naked in the mix. This is a sonic and lyrical funeral for a way of life that will never return. After the end of times, it's not just the food, energy, and political systems that will need to be rebuilt. The myths, stories, and rituals we use to make sense of the world also need to be re-examined. This is an album about resilience and the persistence of hope for a future beyond any reasonable justification.
