{"product_id":"cory-seznec_backroad-carnival_2017_ino","title":"BACKROAD CARNIVAL","description":"Backroad Carnival marks the return of Franco-American globetrotter Cory Seznec after a three-and-a-half-year stay in Ethiopia. This is his second solo album after his debut Beauty In The Dirt, and his annoying habit of clashing with genre obsession in the music industry by skillfully blending different styles of Folk, World, Blues, and Pop is still very much present. Whether with the eclectic roots\/world music trio Groanbox, with the Afro-New-Folk of the Seznec Bros, his collaborations with Ethiopian artists in the bands MistO-MistO and Damakase, or for his solo project, Cory stubbornly blurs boundaries and expresses himself outside the lines. This time, Cory sought a more amplified and analog sound. Recorded mainly at Tonehouse studios in Noisy-le-Roi on a Studer A80 24-track tape recorder with old amps and other equipment, the result is a warm and full sound, echoing old 70s Rock albums while retaining new touches of world music and Contemporary Folk. While the music itself is not particularly Ethiopian, Cory's narratives are the result of numerous journeys on backroads and in remote places in Africa and elsewhere, mixed with modern and engaged themes. The unexpected encounter, in the middle of the Ethiopian bush, of a young guy determined to sell his two sisters to Cory, was the inspiration for Sell You My Soul, which transforms into a blues-rock salvo questioning the notion of sacrifice in order to succeed in life. The Folk-Pop ballad Hawk on a Haystack, carried by the banjo, begins with a staring contest in the Ethiopian mountains. The thunderous afrobeat (interspersed with Congolese-style guitar sounds and Western Pop) Tattered Flag was inspired by a pinnace trip along the Niger River in Mali and becomes a meditation on the shameless greed of modern life. Pigeon Man is a slide guitar blues about a man who meticulously fed pigeons every day at 2 PM by the Bassin de la Villette. Let It All Go is a New Orleans gospel blues that encourages letting go instead of holding grudges. Colette Bar \u0026 Restaurant is a rumba in French recounting an absurd concert in a dive bar on a small street in Awassa, Ethiopia. God Will Change Your Situation is a 70s Rock-Afro-Blues sermon triggered by a postcard received from Congo. The instrumental Picayune Baliverne is a western-style piece in a junk heap in 5\/4, and Zanzibar (Ebb \u0026 Flow) is distinctly inspired by East African guitar and percussion. Finally, the last track, The Parting Glass, the only cover on the album, takes this Irish-Scottish melodrama on a journey of African fingerpicking guitar. Backroad Carnival is a true gumbo of proudly eclectic and sometimes eccentric tracks.","brand":"Cory Seznec","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55310143848792,"sku":null,"price":23905429.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/0191061552635_bb6c8f5f-edeb-42f5-8373-9c2dc307f5d9.jpg?v=1765823665","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/cory-seznec_backroad-carnival_2017_ino","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
