It is friendship that has allowed the Chastity Belt project to endure, its members having grown up together, both personally and musically. Over the course of a rich discography full of resonance, they have moved from the loud humor of their early albums to lush, introspective moods that they have refined with each release through their signature intertwining guitars, meticulous rhythms, and a subtle blend of melancholy and optimism. All My Friends brings together tracks recorded over several years, in different time zones and studios, including Seahorse Sound in Los Angeles, Way Out in Woodinville, and a centuries-old house on the Greek island of Hydra. The oldest track dates back to around 2018; the most recent were finalized over the past year. Today, the band is split between three cities (Los Angeles, Seattle, and Chicago); with less time devoted to writing and rehearsing, the songs are often fine-tuned in the studio, relying on the spontaneity and instinct that come from a deep familiarity with one another. The result is rougher and less polished than their last two albums, closer in spirit to the band’s roots. Writing and recording are hard work, but Chastity Belt’s studio sessions are also marked by the joy of a reunion. On Hydra, they decided to leave the studio for a day to take a boat to the other end of the island. Back in Los Angeles, a session held in December led to the very first Seahorse Sound Studios “Secret Santa”: a strict $20 limit, with each gift coming exclusively from a gas station or a neighborhood grocery store. The names were kept secret with the utmost seriousness. Ceremonial paper-bag hats were worn. These moments of relaxation, shared dinners, charades, and watching silly YouTube videos together are an integral part of time spent in the studio.
