{"product_id":"carmen-souza_portingles_2025_pia","title":"Port’Inglês","description":"\"Port'Inglês\" (English Port) is a musical tale from the islands. The untold stories of the British presence in Cape Verde and the struggle for decolonization are sung in Carmen Souza's unique style. In this new music, jazz speaks a language of freedom that is meaningful to all cultures and blends perfectly with traditional music and rhythms such as Funana, Contradança, Morna, or Mazurka – reflecting the multi-layered hybridity of Cape Verde itself. Port'Inglês was recorded in the year Portugal celebrated 50 years of the Carnation Revolution, the military coup that overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo government on April 25, 1974. This movement paved the way for the end of wars in Lusophone colonial Africa and opened the door to their independence from Portugal in 1975. Having resided in the UK for 16 years, Souza uses her music to explore the unexpected connections between her homeland, Cape Verde, and the UK, a country that has nurtured her creativity. Inspired by her master's thesis on the British presence in Cape Verde, Carmen Souza embarked on a deeply personal and musically enriching journey. By creating a collection of original songs deeply rooted in the spirit of the islands, she tells the stories of the encounters between these two cultures and their lasting impact on Cape Verde after centuries of English presence. This journey testifies to her passion and dedication to her craft, inviting the audience to share her musical exploration. \"I drew inspiration from the tales of Cape Verde to create this musical suite. As part of my research for my master's thesis, I sought to embody this historical period through music. The album explores themes of cultural identity, resistance, colonialism, and the ongoing struggle for decolonization, highlighting the link between Cape Verde and the UK. Inspiration came from folk tales, sea narratives, and even British folk music's Sea Shanties.\" Like the islanders themselves, the music of Cape Verde is born from a blend of cultures. Carmen Souza and Theo Pascal, her producer, bassist, and co-composer, have been taking risks with their signature sound for over two decades, using jazz to create a new Creole musical language with their Lusophone\/Cape Verdean DNA. Their music has never seemed more in tune with the vibrant British jazz scene, where jazz is much closer to its multicultural audience, open and welcoming to other influences.
