Bands like Poison, Quiet Riot, and Motley Crue ruled the roost, but there was a secondary band that earned the respect of many people as well as legions of fans, yet never gained the prominence of the aforementioned groups. Hurricane was that band. Hurricane is an American hair metal band formed in 1983, originally featuring the current lead singer of Foreigner, Kelly Hansen (vocals\/rhythm guitar), Robert Sarzo (guitar), Tony Cavazo (bass), and Jay Schellen (drums). Cavazo and Sarzo are the younger brothers of Carlos Cavazo and Rudy Sarzo from Quiet Riot. Kevin DuBrow from Quiet Riot introduced Robert Sarzo to Tony Cavazo in the early 1980s. After deciding to form a band, Sarzo and Cavazo recruited vocalist Kelly Hansen, drummer Jay Schellen, and guitarist Michael Guy. The band decided to self-release an album, Take What You Want, after several labels refused to sign them. The album and constant touring allowed them to secure a contract with a major label. In 1986 and 1987, they opened for Stryper's To Hell with the Devil album tour. They signed with Enigma Records (the same label as Stryper). They also opened for Gary Moore's U.S. tour in 1987. In 1988, the band released their first album, Over the Edge. Fueled by a powerful yet melodic heavy metal sound, the album reached number 92 on the U.S. album charts and includes the cover \"I'm Eighteen\" by Alice Cooper, as well as the band's most successful track, \"I'm on to You,\" written by Jeff Jones. The title track, \"Over the Edge,\" was also released as a single. In 1989, Sarzo left the band and was replaced by former Lion guitarist Doug Aldrich. \u003cbr\u003e This lineup recorded the album Slave to the Thrill, which was released in 1990. With this third album, Hurricane undoubtedly delivers their best recording. Packed with catchy and highly infectious melodies, Slave To The Thrill is an album that perfectly defines the term hair metal. Led by the beautiful voice of Kelly Hansen, matching the vocals of Whitesnake and Foreigner (Kelly would join the latter after Hurricane's breakup, replacing Lou Gramm), the riffs and arrangements of Doug Aldrich combined with Jay Schellen's drumming and Tony Cavazo's bass, this release was extraordinary. The opener \"Reign of Love\" confirmed this within seconds, a hell of a way to start. \"Next To You\" has that riff that melts all defenses, and Hansen sings like a madman. \"Young Man\" rolls out the red carpet for Doug Aldrich, who steals the show from start to finish, a true anthem of rebellion. The sexy groove of \"Dance Little Sister\" is no accident; the band knows exactly what they're doing, and it shows. This brings us to one of the most beautiful ballads of all time, \"Don't Wanna Dream,\" whose chorus is absolutely stunning. \"Temptation,\" \"10,000 Years\" allow Aldrich to once again deliver ripping guitar sounds. After a short interlude comes \"In the Fire\" with a bluesy riff and Let Is Slide, an absolutely brilliant swamp-boogie. A smooth bass groove permeates \"Lock me Up\" and is only accentuated by Aldrich's six-string magic, once again. The record concludes with the fiery \"Smiles Like a Child\" \u003cbr\u003e Slave to the Thrill remains one of the best albums of the hair metal era. The relative lack of success of the album at the time can be attributed to the changing musical climate for Hurricane.
