Started in the second half of 2020 during a period of unprecedented isolation, the duo got the ball rolling by acquiring new equipment: a vocal loop pedal for Kuperus and Roland percussion pads for Miller. The album reconnects with the politicized industrial percussive influences of Test Department and the *20 Jazz Funk Greats*-esque synths of Throbbing Gristle. Miller’s reasoning is direct: they were not interested in melody or harmony because they saw none in the world. From the tense techno-industrial blitz of \"Undoing \/ Undone\" to the nervous EBM of \"Fools (We Are…)\" and \"I Am Nothing\", the tracks bristle with an acidic, strident revolt accompanied by unleashed and merciless black leather sequential circuits. Slower tracks like \"Normative Sludge\" or \"She’s Nice Looking\" feature a wide range of vocal effects, with Kuperus appearing indignant and possessed as she denounces the crimes, fears, and failures of a disillusioned world. *Becoming Undone* is also laden with a more personal pain, as Kuperus’s father passed away at the height of the pandemic, just before the album took shape. The singer and Miller confronted the banality of life, surrounded by objects stripped of their meaning.
