The Toccata seconda for piano (1933-34) belongs to an extraordinarily fertile decade in Sorabji's creative life, marked by the composition of a series of colossal works, from the Opus Clavicembalisticum to the Symphonic Variations and the Tantrik Symphony for solo piano. Lasting \"only\" two and a half hours, the Toccata is more modest in scope than these works, but remains a composition of considerable ambition, which had to wait for a new generation of Sorabji performers - led by the Spaniard Abel Sanchez-Aguilera - to be presented to a wider audience than the narrow circle of Sorabji admirers. Reflecting, both in its title and its style, the composer's unwavering love for Bach, the Toccata seconda consists of nine movements drawing inspiration from several Baroque genres: not only the toccata itself, but also the chorale prelude, the passacaglia, the fugue, free fantasies, and fast sections in the style of the perpetual motion, interwoven with the slow movements so characteristic of Sorabji - in this case, a \"tropical\" nocturne and a polyphonic air. Indeed, the Toccata constitutes an admirable synthesis of Sorabji's style, condensed into a relatively compact format. The balanced alternation of contrasting movements of moderate duration, the variety of atmospheres and forms, the emphasis on melody and lyricism, the transparency of textures despite the great pianistic difficulties, make this work particularly accessible to the listener and an excellent introduction to Sorabji's large-scale works. A renowned biochemist turned pianist, Abel Sanchez-Aguilera has performed the complete Scriabin sonatas, the Spanish premiere of Sorabji's Toccata seconda, and the first performance of this work in the United Kingdom since its creation in 1936. This album joins Jonathan Powell's recent recording of the monumental Sequentia Cyclica (PCL10206) and Lukas Huisman's in the Nocturne symphonique (PCLD0119) as important contributions to the Sorabji discography on Piano Classics.","brand":"Abel Sanchez-Aguilera","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57475787981144,"sku":null,"price":23821815.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/abel-sanchez-aguilera_sorabji-toccata-seconda-pour-piano-sanchez-aguilera_2026_disco-outhere-distribution-france","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
